Screening Rate
The Screening Rate tiles show you what percentage of students have completed the recommended screening measure in the current screening window (for grades that have recommended screening measures). This can help you see your progress toward screening students and how many still need to be screened.
What are the screening windows?
Each school year, Star CBM includes three screening windows, whose dates cannot be changed:
- Fall starts on the school year start date or August 1 (whichever is earlier) and runs through November 30.
- Winter is from December 1 through March 31.
- Spring begins April 1 and runs through the end of the school year or July 31.
What are the recommended screening measures for each grade?
The recommended screening measure for each student is based on the student's grade; see the table below. Since the Data Insights are based on the recommended screening measures for all students, different measures are included in the screening rates based on the grades of the students in your school(s).
Grade | Star CBM Reading: Recommended Screening Measure | Star CBM Lectura: Recommended Screening Measure | Star CBM Math: Recommended Screening Measure |
---|---|---|---|
K | Letter Sounds | N/A | Numeral Recognition |
1 | Passage Oral Reading (Grade 1) | Pasajes para lectura en voz alta (español) (Grade 1) | Quantity Comparison |
2 | Passage Oral Reading (Grade 2) | Pasajes para lectura en voz alta (español) (Grade 2) | Addition to 20 |
3 | Passage Oral Reading (Grade 3) | Pasajes para lectura en voz alta (español) (Grade 3) | Mixed Addition and Subtraction |
4 | Passage Oral Reading (Grade 4) | Pasajes para lectura en voz alta (español) (Grade 4) | N/A |
5 | Passage Oral Reading (Grade 5) | N/A | N/A |
6 | Passage Oral Reading (Grade 6) | N/A | N/A |
On the Screening Rate tiles, you'll see the current screening window (Fall, Winter, or Spring) and the date when that window ends. Then, you'll see the percentage of students who have been administered the recommended screening measure in this window. Below that, you'll see the number of students who have been screened out of the total number of students in Star CBM who have screening measures available (grades K-6 for Star CBM Reading, grades 1-4 for Star CBM Lectura, or grades K-3 for Star CBM Math).
To get more detailed information, select Explore the data under the screening percentage and numbers. For more about what you'll see there, see Star CBM Data Insights - Screening Rate.
Participation Rate
The Participation Rate tiles show you what percentage of students have completed any Star CBM Reading, Star CBM Lectura, or Star CBM Math assessment in the current screening window. This can help you see how many students have received some form of assessment.
On the Participation Rate tiles, you'll see the current screening window (Fall, Winter, or Spring) and the date when that window ends. Then, you'll see the percentage of students who have been administered Star CBM Reading, Star CBM Lectura, or Star CBM Math assessments in that window. Below that, you'll see the number of students who have been assessed out of the total number of students in Star CBM in the applicable grades (grades K-6 for Star CBM Reading, grades K-4 for Star CBM Lectura, or grades K-3 for Star CBM Math).
To get more detailed information, select Explore the data under the participation percentage and numbers. For more about what you'll see there, see Star CBM Data Insights - Participation Rate.
Proficiency Rate
The Proficiency Rate is the percentage of students who have scored in the At/Above Benchmark category (for Star CBM Reading and Star CBM Math) or in the Satisfactory/Optimal category (for Star CBM Lectura) on the recommended screening measure in the current screening window. Note: For students who tested more than once on the recommended screening measure in the current window, the first test is used to determine proficiency.
Star CBM Reading and Math screening measures have three benchmark categories available: At/Above Benchmark, On Watch, and Intervention. Only scores within the At/Above Benchmark category are considered proficient. For detailed information about the scores that are in each benchmark category for different measures and grades, see Star CBM Score and Benchmark Tables.
Star CBM Lectura screening measures have two benchmark categories available: Satisfactory/Optimal and Alert. Only scores within the Satisfactory/Optimal category are considered proficient. For detailed information about the scores that are in each benchmark category for different measures and grades, see Star CBM Lectura Score and Benchmark Tables.
On the Proficiency Rate tiles, you'll see the current screening window (Fall, Winter, or Spring) and whether the current proficiency rate is up or down since the previous window in this school year (if data is available). Then, you'll see the proficiency rate as a percentage and the number of students whose scores were proficient out of the total number of students who tested.
To get more detailed information, including data on non-screening measures and measures without benchmarks, select Explore the Data under the proficiency rate. For more about what you'll see there, see Star CBM Data Insights - Measure Proficiency.
% Moving Up
What is the % Moving Up? Based on the recommended screening measure for each student, it's the percentage of students who:
- scored in the Intervention benchmark category (Star CBM Reading and Math) or the Alert benchmark category (Star CBM Lectura) on that measure in the previous screening window, and who
- have scored in a higher benchmark category on that measure in the current screening window
See the tip above for more about screening windows and the recommended screening measures.
At the top of the % Moving Up tiles, you'll see how the percentage of students moving up in the current screening window compares to the percentage that moved up in the previous screening window. For example, if the % Moving Up in the Winter screening window was 43%, and in the Spring screening window it is 50%, the message will tell you that % Moving Up is up 7% since the previous transition.
To get more detailed information on students moving from one benchmark category to another, select Explore the Data under the proficiency rate. For more about what you'll see there, see Star CBM Data Insights - Moving Up: Benchmark Transitions.
% At Risk Overall
This tile is shown for Star CBM Reading only, and only for schools that have the score enabled in the district Star CBM Reading – Overall Risk Score preference. The % At Risk Overall shows you how many students have composite scores below the 20th percentile, indicating the students may be at risk for not meeting grade-level expectations in reading. The Overall Risk Score was developed to support customers who must adhere to state-level reporting requirements; it is not intended to replace the single screening measure per grade/season for universal screening purposes.
Overall Risk Scores are a combination of selected Foundations of Literacy measures in each grade that 1) have norms across the full year and 2) are the most psychometrically useful for creating a combined indicator of risk based on performance in these literacy/reading measures.
The Overall Risk Score is available for students in grades K-2. These measures are used to create the scores:
- Kindergarten
- Letter Naming
- Letter Sounds
- Phoneme Segmentation
- Receptive Nonsense Words
- Grade 1
- Expressive Nonsense Words
- Passage Oral Reading
- Phoneme Segmentation
- Grade 2
- Expressive Nonsense Words
- Passage Oral Reading
At the top of the % At Risk Overall tile for Star CBM Reading, you'll see how the percentage compares to the percentage in the previous screening window. For example, if the % At Risk Overall in the Fall screening window is 16.7%, and in the Spring screening window it was 19.7%, the message will tell you that % At Risk is down 3% since the Spring season. At the bottom of the tile, you'll see the number of students at risk and the total number of students.
To see the benchmark categories for students' Overall Risk Scores, select Explore the data at the bottom of the tile. For more about what you'll see there, see Star CBM Data Insights - % At Risk Overall.
How Recent Is the Data?
At the top of the page, under the school name or the School drop-down list, you'll see the date and time when data was last updated. For teachers, the data is current. For district and school administrators and other staff, the data is updated nightly.
