Choosing the Data to View
First, choose the data that you want to view using the drop-down lists at the top of the page.
- School: If you have access to more than one school, choose "All Schools" to see data from all of your schools or choose a single school. If you only have access to one school, you will see your school name.
- Class or Group: If you choose a single school, you can choose to see data from all classes that you have access to or from a single class or group.
- Grade: Choose "All Grades" or a single grade. Students who took an assessment while in the selected grade(s) will be included.
-
Screening windows: Choose the screening windows (Fall, Winter, or Spring) to compare using the From and To drop-down lists. You can choose screening windows from this school year and the previous school year. You can choose the same window in both drop-down lists if you only want to see results from that window. Note that the data shown will only include students who have tested in both screening windows.
What are the screening windows?
Each year, Star CBM includes three screening windows with fixed dates:
- Fall Starts on the school year start date or August 1 (whichever is earlier) and runs through November 30.
- Winter is from December 1 through March 31.
- Spring begins April 1 and runs through the end of the school year or July 31.
-
Measure: Choose the measure(s) to see data for:
-
Grade-Level Screening Measures includes data for the screening measures for each grade level. Since different grades have different screening measures, this will give you more of an overall picture of how students are doing on their screening measures rather than data on specific measures.
What are the recommended screening measures for each grade?
The recommended screening measure for each student is based on the student's grade; see the table below. Since Proficiency Rate is based on the scores on the recommended measures for all students, different measures are included in the rate based on the grades of the students in your school(s).
Grade Star CBM Reading: Recommended Screening Measure Star CBM Lectura: Recommended Screening Measure Star CBM Math: Recommended Screening Measure K Letter Sounds N/A Numeral Recognition 1 Passage Oral Reading (Grade 1) Pasajes para lectura en voz alta (español) (Grade 1) Quantity Comparison 2 Passage Oral Reading (Grade 2) Pasajes para lectura en voz alta (español) (Grade 2) Addition to 20 3 Passage Oral Reading (Grade 3) Pasajes para lectura en voz alta (español) (Grade 3) Mixed Addition and Subtraction 4 Passage Oral Reading (Grade 4) Pasajes para lectura en voz alta (español) (Grade 4) N/A 5 Passage Oral Reading (Grade 5) Pasajes para lectura en voz alta (español) (Grade 5) N/A 6 Passage Oral Reading (Grade 6) N/A N/A - All Measures includes data for all measures that students have been assessed on. Based on the students' grade levels and the seasons in which they tested, benchmarks may be available for some assessments and not others. This will give you a high-level view of your students' performance in Star CBM.
-
All Normed Measures includes data for all assessments for which benchmarks are available. This gives you a high-level overview of how your students are doing on the measures that are most relevant for their grades. Note that this will include different measures for different grades.

Grade-Level Screening Measures includes data for the screening measures for each grade level. Since different grades have different screening measures, this will give you more of an overall picture of how students are doing on their screening measures rather than data on specific measures.
After you make changes, select Update below the drop-down lists to show the data.
If you select screening windows from different school years, you will see a note will show you whether you are viewing data from the same students from one year to the next (the students who meet the selected criteria this year) or all students in the district from year to year. The school, class, and grade selections determine this.
If you are a District-Level Administrator or School-Level Administrator and you select screening windows from different school years, all schools or classes, and a single grade, you will be asked to choose whether to see cross-sectional data (students in that specific grade in each year) or cohort data (data for the students who are in the selected grade this year, across the selected time periods).
How Recent Is the Data?
To the right of the School and/or Class or Group drop-down list(s), you'll see the date and time when data was last updated. When you're viewing data for all schools, the data is updated nightly. When you're viewing data for individual classes, the data is current.
Viewing the Number of Students in the Categories
First, you'll see bar graphs for each screening window you selected. If benchmarks are available for the assessments based on the student grades, screening windows, and measures, you'll see the percentage of your students whose scores are in each of the benchmark categories. Those categories are all that you will see if you selected "Grade-Level Screening Measures" or "All Normed Measures" in the Measure drop-down list. Note: If you choose "All Measures" or "All Normed Measures," the percentage of assessments is shown in each category instead of the percentage of students.
When benchmarks are available for Star CBM Reading and Star CBM Math assessments, there are three categories: At/Above Benchmark (green), On Watch (blue), and Intervention (red); for Rapid Automatic Naming Star CBM assignments, only At/Above Benchmark (green) and At Risk (red) are available. Scores within the At/Above Benchmark category are considered proficient. In the example below, 65% of the students had scores in the At/Above Benchmark category in the Winter window; that increased to 77% in the Spring window. The percentage of students in On Watch went up from 8% to 14%. The percentage of students whose scores were in the Intervention/At Risk category decreased from 27% to 9%.
When benchmarks are available for Star CBM Lectura assessments, there are two categories: Satisfactory/Optimal (green) and Alert (red). Scores within the Satisfactory/Optimal category are considered proficient. In the example below, 42% of the students had scores in the Satisfactory/Optimal category in the Winter window; that increased to 80% in the Spring window. The percentage of students in Alert went down from 58% to 20%.
For students who tested on a measure more than once in a screening window, only the first assessment is included.
If you choose All Measures, it is likely that some assessments have benchmarks and some do not. The example below includes all measures and all grades for Star CBM Reading for the Winter and Spring screening windows.
In addition to the benchmark categories, you'll see two gray categories for assessments that don't have benchmarks available for the grade and season:
- Gray category with a check mark: The percentage of assessments for which the students' scores would be At/Above Benchmark (for Star CBM Reading and Star CBM Math) or Satisfactory/Optimal (for Star CBM Lectura) for the nearest grade and season with benchmarks for the measure.
- Gray category without a check mark: The percentage of assessments with scores that would not be At/Above Benchmark or Satisfactory/Optimal in the nearest grade and season with benchmarks for the measure.
If you select one of the sections of a bar graph, you can see more information, including the season name, category name, and the number of students in that category compared to the total. For benchmark categories, you'll also see the criteria for that category in terms of the Percentile Rank score. To see which students are in the selected category, select View student list. For more about viewing the student list, see Star CBM Data Insights - Students in a Benchmark Category or Off-Grade.
For detailed information about the scores that fall into each Star CBM Reading or Star CBM Math benchmark category for different measures and grades, see Star CBM Score and Benchmark Tables. To find that information for Star CBM Lectura, see Star CBM Lectura Score and Benchmark Tables.
Below the graphs, a table will show you the percentage and number of students or assessments with scores in each category within each window. To see a list of the students and the applicable assessment scores, select the number or percentage. For more about viewing the list of students, see Star CBM Data Insights - Students in a Benchmark Category or Off-Grade.
Viewing a Printable PDF or Downloading Data for Spreadsheet Programs
Do you want to print or save the data? Select Print or Save; then, using the options in the window that opens, print the page or save it to a PDF file.
To download a file suitable for spreadsheet programs (.csv), select Download Data. The file will include a row for each screening window; each row will include the school name (or "All Schools"), the class or group or "All Classes" (if you have chosen a single school), the season/screening window, and the number of students whose scores are in each benchmark category.
Going Back
To go back to the main Data Insights page to see other information, select All Data at the top of the page.
