On the Student Details page, when the Star CBM English tab is selected, you can see your student's Star CBM English scores and the student's progress toward his or her current goals. You can also see how the student did on past goals. Note: Scores on Field Test assessments do not appear on the Student Details page.
How to Get to This Page
In the Star Record Book, with the CBM English Assessments tab selected, select the name of the student whose information you want to see.
You can use the drop-down lists at the top of the page to view information on different subjects, classes/groups, or students. If you have access to more than one school, you can also choose a different school.
Latest Assessment
To the right of the drop-down lists, you'll see the student's latest Star and Star CBM scores for the selected subject.
For Star CBM, you'll see the student's latest Star CBM score and the measure it is for; if a benchmark category is available for that measure, you will see the color of the student's category. In the example above, the latest Star CBM score is 55 CPM for Passage Oral Reading; percent accuracy is also shown for Passage Oral Reading as in the example above. If the student's benchmark category is different from the last test, you'll see an arrow to show whether the category is higher or lower. Note: If norms and benchmarks aren't available for the measure for the student's grade and the season, the circle next to the score will be gray; however, you will see a green check mark next to the score if that score would fall within the At/Above Benchmark category in the nearest grade and season where benchmarks exist for the measure (or, for Sight and High-Frequency Words, Passage Oral Reading, and Encoding, the assessment's grade level and the nearest season).
If the student's last Star CBM assessment (English or Spanish) was a Spanish assessment for Star CBM Lectura, you will see that score instead of the latest English Star CBM score. Star CBM Lectura scores with benchmarks have two benchmark categories: Satisfactory/Optimal (green) and Alert (red).
For Star Early Literacy and Star Reading scores, you'll see the benchmark category color (and an arrow if it has changed) and the Percentile Rank. Then, you'll see the Scaled Score or Lexile Measure, depending on the scale selected in the class view (on the Latest Assessments or Screening Comparison tab). For Star Early Literacy, you'll also see the Literacy Classification. For Star Reading, the Zone of Proximal Development or the Lexile Range will be included, depending on the setting of the Lexile Range preference (Lexile Range is also shown for Star Early Literacy if the preference setting allows it).
For Star Math, you'll see the benchmark category color (and an arrow if it has changed), the Percentile Rank, and the Scaled Score. Then, if the Quantile Measure preference is set to use Quantile Measures for your school, you'll see the Quantile Measure and Quantile Range. For students in grades 1-8 who have taken a Star Math English test, you will also see information about the student's Algebra Readiness that indicates whether students are meeting (or even exceeding) grade-level expectations based on related skills.
Projected scores are also shown for Star Reading, Star Early Literacy, and Star Math. These reflect Renaissance's research-based estimate of what the student's Scaled Score will be by the end of the school year. Based on national data, 50% of a student's academic peers met or exceeded this amount of growth (with peers defined as students in the same grade with a similar score history).
Data for Each School Year
On the Star CBM English tab of the Student Details page, data is grouped by school year. The current school year's data is always visible, but data from previous school years is hidden by default. To see data from previous school years, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select Load Results from Previous School Years.
A heading marks the start of each school year's data. For each school year, you will see the student's goals and assessments. In the example below, the student has no goals, but the student's assessments for each school year are shown. You can hide previous school year data again by selecting Hide Results from Previous School Years.
Goals and Goal Charts
If the student has no goals, you can start a new goal by selecting Set a goal under the current school year heading. This link is only available for students who have no goals; to set other goals for students who already have at least one goal, go to the class view and follow the steps in Goals and Star CBM.
If the student has current goals, for each goal, you will first see the goal information above a chart: the start date, the end date, the goal name, the goal (and grade level for Passage Oral Reading), the expected rate of improvement (weekly growth rate) required to meet the goal, and the actual rate of improvement. Note: Rate of improvement is not shown for Sight and High-Frequency Words or for Encoding.
Below the goal information, you will see a chart like the one above, which shows:
- A dashed yellow intervention line that indicates when the goal (and the teacher's intervention) started.
- All scores for the student's assessments on this measure during the goal period. If benchmarks are available for the measure in the student's grade and the season, the color of each score circle shows you which benchmark category the score is in; if norms/benchmarks are not available, the circles are gray.
Sight and High-Frequency Words, Passage Oral Reading, and Encoding assessments are available at different grade levels. When you set a goal for one of these measures, you choose the score that is the starting point for the goal. The grade level of the assessment associated with that score determines the grade level of the goal. The chart on this page only shows scores for assessments with the grade level used for the goal. Assessments for other grade levels won't be included. Note that benchmarks are only available for assessments at the student's grade level; scores for assessments at other grade levels are shown in gray.
- An aim line from the original score to the goal, ending in a star that represents the goal.
- If there are three or more tests in the goal time period, a black trend line shows the student's trending growth in scores in the goal time period based on the assessments taken so far.
- To edit the goal, select Edit Goal above the chart and to the right. Note: If you have deactivated the assessment score that was the starting point for the goal, Edit Goal isn't available; you need to reactivate the assessment before you can edit the goal.
- To delete a goal, select Delete Goal above the chart and to the right. Deleted goals cannot be restored; you should only delete goals that you don't need to keep a record of. If you simply want to end the goal now, but you want to keep a record of it, select Edit Goal instead, then select End Goal in the window that opens.
If there is no chart, and a message says "There are no assessments associated with this goal," the only assessment associated with the goal has either been deactivated or transferred to another student. If you deactivated the assessment, you can reactivate it as described under "Assessment Tables" below.
Below the goal chart for each current goal, you'll see a table of the assessments that apply to that goal. The table includes the date of each assessment, the activity (measure name), the score, and the Rate of Improvement (ROI) per week between the goal's starting score and each subsequent score. (For the earliest test, a dash will be shown for ROI since that is the starting point.) Note: Rate of improvement is not shown for Sight and High-Frequency Words and Encoding.
Below the table(s) for the current goal(s), you will see a table for each previous goal with the same information that you see in current goal tables. Above the table for each previous goal, you'll see the result (whether the goal was met) and a View Chart link, which you can select to see the goal chart. In the example above, the second table shows a previous goal; the goal was not met.
Assessment Tables
In addition to the tables for current and previous goals, you will see an Other Assessments table that lists all assessments that do not apply to specific goals in the school year. If the student has never had a goal in the school year, this table is labeled "All Assessments" as shown in the example below. Like the goal tables, the Other Assessments or All Assessments table includes the date of each assessment, the activity/measure, and the score; however, it does not include the Rate of Improvement since that does not apply.
In each table of assessments, the color of the circle next to each score shows the benchmark category that the score falls into. If norms and benchmarks aren't available for the student's grade and season, the circle is gray, but if you see a green check mark next to the score, that score would fall within the At/Above Benchmark category in the nearest grade and season where benchmarks exist for the measure. (For Sight and High-Frequency Words, Passage Oral Reading, and Encoding, when the student is assessed at another grade level, the benchmarks for the assessment's grade level and the nearest season to the student's grade are used for the check mark.)
If recorded audio is available for an assessment, you will see the audio icon () after the activity name. If you view the assessment details, you can listen to the recording (or remove it if you wish).
If notes are available, you will see the notes icon. The braille
icon shows you which assessments were taken using braille forms.
For each assessment, if you select the next to "View Details" in the Actions column, you have three choices:
- View Details takes you to the assessment report, where you can see the student's results, your notes, and the items that the student answered incorrectly. You can also edit the score if the assessment is from the current school year.
- Deactivate allows you to deactivate an assessment so that the score is not included in the student's records. For deactivated scores, you will see a Reactivate option that you can use to restore the score. Only assessments from the current school year can be deactivated/reactivated.
- Transfer Activity allows you to transfer a student's assessment score to another student if the assessment is from the current school year. This is useful if an assessment was accidentally completed under the wrong student's name.
Avoid deactivating and transferring assessments that are the starting points for goals. If you deactivate or transfer the starting assessment, you cannot edit the goal (though you can delete it). You can reactivate a deactivated assessment if necessary.
Printing or Saving the Student Details
To save the Student Details to a file or to print the page, select Print or Save under the Latest Assessment information and to the right of the tabs on the page. Then, using your browser's print options, choose whether to save to a file (PDF) or to select a printer and print a paper copy. In the PDF or printed copy, some items are omitted that are part of the user interface but not part of student data. Note: If you want to include previous school year data when you print or save, be sure to select Load Results from Previous School Years before you select Print or Save.
Exporting the Student's Scores to a .csv (Comma-Separated Value) File
To export all scores shown for the selected student and subject, select Download Data under the Latest Assessment information and to the right of the tabs. Note: The file that you download includes the student's data from all school years, regardless of whether you have chosen to load results from previous school years.
A .csv file named export-StudentDetails.csv will be downloaded to your computer. This file can be opened with spreadsheet programs so that you can use the data in your own reporting. The file includes a row for each of the student's assessments with the following information. You will also see other columns that apply to Star Reading, Star Math, and Star Early Literacy; those columns are empty when you export information for Star CBM.
