The Star ACT®/SAT® Readiness report uses students' Star Reading and Star Math test scores to determine their readiness for the ACT® and/or SAT® tests, presenting this information in a graphical format.
How do I get to this page?
- Log in to Renaissance.
- On the Home page:
- Renaissance Next: Select Reports under “My Data” in the left-hand sidebar; then select Reports in the sidebar under “Star / Assessment.”
-
Legacy Mode: Select Reports; then select Star / Assessment in the drop-down list.
- On the Star / Assessment tab on the Reports page, under "State Performance and Mastery," select Star ACT/SAT Readiness Report (Grades 9-12).
Who can do this with default user permissions?
District Level Administrators, District Dashboard Owners, District Staff, School Level Administrators, School Staff, Teachers
- Use the Subject drop-down list to choose which Star assessments to use in the report: Reading will use Star Reading; Math will use Star Math.
This report does not use scores from the following assessments:
- Star Early Literacy (English and Spanish)
- Star Math (Spanish, Algebra, and Geometry)
- Star Reading (Spanish)
- Star Custom
- Use the Benchmark Type drop-down list to select which benchmark you want to compare students' Star scores to. (SAT® will be listed as SAT® ERW if the Subject you chose is Reading and SAT® Math if the Subject you chose is Math).
- Use the School drop-down list to select a school.
- If you are assigned to only one school, you will not see the School drop-down list.
- School administrators and school staff can only select their own schools.
- Teachers can only select schools that they are assigned to.
- Use the Students drop-down list to select all classes or a single class at the chosen school.
- School administrators and school staff can only select classes in their own school.
- Teachers can only select their own classes.
You can also find and select specific groups at the chosen school by using the Groups link below the Students drop-down list. Selecting this link will open a corresponding pop-up window; in that window, enter search criteria in the field at the top of the window to find specific groups. Once you've searched, check the box at the top of the list to select all the available choices, or make individual selections below it.
- School administrators and school staff can only select classes or groups in their own school.
- Teachers can only select one of their own classes or groups.
- Select the arrow in the heading of a column to re-sort by the data in that column. The arrow indicates which column is being used for sorting and the order of the sort: up arrow = A–Z, down arrow = Z–A).
Once you have made your choices, select Save Selection at the bottom of the pop-up window. -
If you want to use demographic data to further refine the data in the report, select Change Demographics...
By default, the "All" option is chosen for Ethnicity, Gender, Language, and Grade Level. To reduce the scope, choose the "Select" option at the top of the appropriate column and then check your selections in that column.
Since this report is meant for students in grades 9–12, it may be a good idea to use the Grade Level column to limit the data to students in those grades.
In the example above, the user has selected two Languages and three Grade Levels, while leaving Ethnicity and Gender at the default "All" options. Note: The Filter Reports by Ethnicity user permission may be set to prevent the use of ethnicities as a filter.By default, the "All" option is chosen for Characteristics. To reduce the scope, choose Select Characteristics... and then check each characteristic you want students in the report to have. You must also choose any or all (after "Include students with") to specify whether students with any of the selected characteristics will be included in the report or only those with all of the selected characteristics.
Once you are finished choosing demographic options, select Apply at the bottom of the window to save your choices (or Cancel to close the window without saving your choices).
In the example above, the user selected two Characteristics (ADA and ESL). Because any is selected, the report will include students who are ADA, ESL, or both. If all had been selected, only students who are both ADA and ESL would be included. Note: The Filter Reports by Characteristics user permission may be set to prevent the use of characteristics as a filter.
- Use the Group By drop-down list to choose how you want the data grouped in the report: by class/group, grade, or teacher.
- Use the Reporting Period drop-down list to choose the month that you want to take test data from.
- Only the current month or the prior month in the current school year can be used in this report.
- If a student took more than one test in the selected month, the score from the latest test taken will be used in this report.
- Students who have not taken a test in the selected month will not be included in the report.
- Check Show Grade Equivalent if you want Grade Equivalent scores to appear on the report.
Check Hide Groups Without Data if you want to omit groups from the report that have no Star test scores.
- When you are done selecting report options, select Update Report.
- The upper part of the report shows (in both tabular and graphical form) how many of the selected students are on track to reach the At/Above Benchmark for the chosen test, based on their latest Star test scores in the selected month.
In the example above, in this class of 33 9th-grade students, 30 of them took Star Reading tests in October. Based on those scores, 19 of them (63%) will likely be At/Above Benchmark when they eventually take the ACT®; 11 of them (37%) are likely to be Below Benchmark at that time.
The ACT® College Readiness Benchmarks are scores that indicate a student has a 50% chance of obtaining a B or higher or about a 75% chance of obtaining a C or higher in corresponding credit-bearing courses. For more information about ACT® benchmarks, please visit the ACT® website. SAT® College and Career Readiness Benchmarks are scores that indicate a student has a 75% chance of earning at a least a C in first-semester, credit-bearing college courses. For more information about SAT® benchmarks, please visit the SAT® website. Note that some states have adopted SAT® benchmarks that differ from SAT® College and Career Readiness Benchmarks.
Estimates do not guarantee performance on the ACT® or the SAT®. Researchers linked Renaissance Star Assessments to the ACT® and SAT® scales at grade 11 to determine the Star scores that were equivalent to ACT® and SAT® benchmarks. They then estimated benchmarks for each month back to grade 9. Estimates were made using normative data and may not be accurate for all students. For more information, please view the ACT® and SAT® linking studies.
- The lower part of the report breaks out the data on a per-student basis.
For each student, the date of the latest test they took in the selected month is shown, along with the test score (using the selected scale from step 8, if it was necessary), Grade Placement, Percentile Rank, and Grade Equivalent (if that option was selected in step 8). Students who are below the benchmark are listed first; students who did not take or complete a test in the selected month are at the bottom.
- You can change any of the options you have selected and then regenerate the report by selecting Update Report.
