Star Diagnostic Report

The Star Diagnostic Report presents diagnostic and skill information for an individual student.

How do I get to this page?

  1. Log in to Renaissance.
  2. On the Home page:
    • Renaissance Next: Select Reports under “My Data” in the left-hand sidebar; then select Reports in the sidebar under “Star / Assessment.”
    • Legacy Mode: Select Reports; then select Star / Assessment in the drop-down list.

  3. On the Star / Assessment tab on the Reports page, under “State Performance and Mastery,” select Star Diagnostic Report.

Who can do this with default user permissions?

For our customers in Florida, on the Star Diagnostic Report, domains are referred to as strands, and standards are referred to as benchmarks.

  1. Use the Subject and Assessment Types drop-down lists to choose the assessment types to include in the report. The assessment types available will change depending on the subject chosen:

  2. Use the School drop-down list to select a school.

    • If you are assigned to only one school, you will not see the School drop-down list.
    • School administrators and school staff can only select their own schools.
    • Teachers can only select schools that they are assigned to.
  3. Use the Students drop-down list to select either a single class at the chosen school, or choose All Classes to select all the classes at the chosen school.

    To select specific classes, groups, or students at the chosen school, use the links below the Students drop-down list. Selecting one of these links will open a corresponding pop-up window; in that window, enter search criteria in the field at the top of the window to find specific classes, groups, or students with names that start with the criteria you enter (in the "Select Students" pop-up window, you can also select a grade to narrow down the list of students). Once you've searched, check the box at the top of the list to select all the available choices, or make individual selections below it.

In each case, a search field at the top lets you search for specific classes, groups, or students; a check box above the listed classes, groups, or students lets you select or deselect all of them at once; and the Clear All link, Cancel button, and Save Selection buttons are at the bottom.

    • School administrators and school staff can only select classes, groups, or students in their own school.
    • Teachers can only select their own classes, their own groups, or students enrolled in one of their own classes.
    • Select the arrow in the heading of a column to re-sort by the data in that column. The arrow indicates which column is being used for sorting and the order of the sort: up arrow = A–Z, down arrow = Z–A).

    Once you have made your choices, select Save Selection at the bottom of the pop-up window.

  4. If you want to use demographic data to further refine the data in the report, select Change Demographics... (or Choose Demographics...).

    By default, the "All" option is chosen for Ethnicity, Gender, Language, and Grade Level. To reduce the scope, choose the "Select" option at the top of the appropriate column and then check your selections in that column.

    In the example above, the user has selected two Languages and three Grade Levels, while leaving Ethnicity and Gender at the default "All" options. Note: The Filter Reports by Ethnicity user permission may be set to prevent the use of ethnicities as a filter.

    By default, the "All" option is chosen for Characteristics. To reduce the scope, choose Select Characteristics... and then check each characteristic you want students in the report to have. You must also choose any or all (after "Include students with") to specify whether students with any of the selected characteristics will be included in the report or only those with all of the selected characteristics.

    Two characteristics have been selected. The Apply and Cancel buttons are at the bottom.
    In the example above, the user selected two Characteristics (ADA and ESL). Because any is selected, the report will include students who are ADA, ESL, or both. If all had been selected, only students who are both ADA and ESL would be included. Note: The Filter Reports by Characteristics user permission may be set to prevent the use of characteristics as a filter.

    Once you are finished choosing demographic options, select Apply at the bottom of the window to save your choices (or Cancel to close the window without saving your choices).

  5. Use the Date Range drop-down list to choose the dates you want to generate the report for. You can select an existing marking period, screening window, or you can select Custom... and set your own dates (use the calendars to select a range of dates or type them in the fields using m/d/yyyy format; then select Apply to use the dates you have chosen or Cancel to close this pop-up without saving your selection). Dates can be in the current school year or up to three years prior to the current school year.

    The user has chosen to select custom dates. A pop-up calendar is open, allowing the user to choose the dates. The dates can also be entered in the fields above the calendar. The Apply and Cancel buttons are in the upper-right corner of the pop-up window.

    If schools use their own unique date ranges within a district screening window, those ranges will all have the same name. To help you tell them apart, the dates they cover will be added to the end of the name.

    Note that this report uses data from the most recent assessment during the chosen date range (not all of them).

  6. Use the Sort Students By drop-down list to choose how you want students to be sorted in the report: by classes/groups, grade, or last name.

  7. Use the Scale drop-down list to choose which scale you want to use for the scores on the report. (If you select a scale that doesn't apply to the selected assessment type, the default scale for that assessment type will be used.)

    • The Lexile® Scale will not be a selectable option if the report is being run for Star Math or Star Matemáticas.
    • Although the Lexile® Scale can be selected for Star Alfabetización temprana assessments, it will not apply to those assessments (the Star Unified scale will be used instead).
  8. Use the Benchmark Type drop-down list to choose which benchmark you want to measure students' scores against.

    State benchmarks are not currently available for Star Early Literacy, Star Alfabetización temprana, Star Lectura, and Star Matemáticas.

  9. To the right of the Benchmark Type drop-down list:

    If you selected Star Early Literacy as the assessment type in step 1, "Show Domain Scores" will be replaced with "Show Benchmark Bar Chart"; select it if you want to see the benchmark bar chart on the report.

  10. Below the Scale and Benchmark Type drop-down lists:

    • Check Show Student ID to include student IDs on the report.
    • Check Hide Students Without Data if you want to have students without test data omitted from the report.

  11. Once you are done choosing report options, select Update Report.

  12. The report will generate and then open at the bottom of the page.

    Example report: Star Reading—The example shown below is for a Star Reading Enterprise (English) assessment. It includes Scaled Score (and the benchmark category it falls into—the benchmark type is shown at the top), Percentile Rank, Instructional Reading Level, and Estimated Oral Reading Fluency. Because of the options selected in step 9, the Grade Equivalent and domain scores are also included. Since this is a Star Reading Enterprise (English) assessment, the Zone of Proximal Development is also shown (below the domain scores).

    Example report: Star Early Literacy—The example shown below is for a Star Early Literacy (English) assessment. It includes Scaled Score (and the benchmark category it falls into—the benchmark type is shown at the top), Percentile Rank, Estimated Oral Reading Fluency, Literacy Classification, and information about the test duration and fidelity. Below that are the sub-domain and skill set scores.

    For each student, you will see the date and time of their last completed assessment (of the type you selected earlier). The scores related to that assessment are shown below—they will vary based on the assessment type. Note that for the domain scores, the skills shown are based on the learning standards chosen for your district.

    You may see one of these messages about the student's test performance in the "Test Duration & Fidelity" section:

    • Non-Reader: A non-reader is a student who took a Star Reading (English) assessment and got a Unified Scaled Score lower than 615. For lower-grade students, you may want to retest them with Star Early Literacy and/or work on developing a sight-reading vocabulary of at least 100 words before retesting in Star Reading. A score this low may indicate that the student was randomly choosing test responses; consider retesting the student and observing him/her during the assessment.
    • Extended Time Limit: Whether the student was given extra time to answer test questions.
    • Accessibility: Whether accommodations were made available to the student during the test (audio, assistive technology, accommodations, unlimited time, and/or alternate response).
    • Short/Long Test Time: The student spent significantly less/more time taking the test than expected. This message appears based on the following testing times:

    • The score in the Scaled Score section is shown in the scale you selected earlier.
    • If the following conditions are met:
      then the Lexile® range will be shown instead of the ZPD.
    • If the report is for Star Math Enterprise (English) or Star Math Progress Monitoring (English) assessments and the Quantile® measure preference has been set to show Quantile® Measures, the report will show Quantile® measures and Quantile® ranges. (At this time, Quantile® measures are not available for Star Matemáticas, Star Math Algebra, or Star Math Geometry assessments.)
    • Students in grade 12 who have only taken Star Math Enterprise assessments will not see domain scores on the Diagnostic Report. When students move on to grade 12, the material studied is generally outside of the domains that are assessed in Star Math. For that reason, we do not report on domains, as they are typically covered prior to this grade level.

    • If the report is for Star Early Literacy or Star Alfabetización temprana, the layout will be slightly different (to accommodate the presence of literacy domains).

      Skill sets with a blue arrow next to them are the skill sets the student is ready to learn, based on the student's Scaled Score. If a number less than 40 is displayed for a skill set, it means either that the student was not presented with any test items that measure that skill or that the skill is too advanced for the student to learn at this time.

    • If you selected Reading Spanish as the subject, a pair of radio buttons will appear above the domains; use them to select which language will be used to show the domains on the report: Español (Spanish) or English.

    • If you selected Star Math Algebra or Star Math Geometry as the assessment type, the domains shown will be limited to Algebra or Geometry domains (instead of all Math domains).
  13. You can change any of the options you have selected and then regenerate the report by selecting Update Report.
  14. Select the PDF icon at the top of the page or the Print or Save button above the first table in the report to create a PDF of the report. You can also select the Download Data button above the first table in the report to download a CSV (comma-separated values) version of the report that you can open in a spreadsheet program.
