Star Summary Report

The Star Summary Report summarizes student test results for a specific date range.

How do I get to this page?

  1. Log in to Renaissance.
  2. On the Home page:
    • Renaissance Next: Select Reports under “My Data” in the left-hand sidebar; then select Reports in the sidebar under “Star / Assessment.”
    • Legacy Mode: Select Reports; then select Star / Assessment in the drop-down list.

  3. On the Star / Assessment tab on the Reports page, under “Test Status and Results,” select Star Summary Report.

Who can do this with default user permissions?

District Level Administrators, District Dashboard Owners, District Staff, School Level Administrators, School Staff, Teachers

  1. Use the Subject and Assessment Types drop-down lists to choose the assessment types to include in the report. The assessment types available will change depending on the subject chosen:

  2. Use the School drop-down list to select a school.

    • If you are assigned to only one school, you will not see the School drop-down list.
    • School administrators and school staff can only select their own schools.
    • Teachers can only select schools that they are assigned to.
  3. Use the Students drop-down list to select either a single class at the chosen school, or choose All Classes to select all the classes at the chosen school.

    To select specific classes, groups, or students at the chosen school, use the links below the Students drop-down list. Selecting one of these links will open a corresponding pop-up window; in that window, check the box at the top of the list to select all the available choices, or make individual selections below it. You can enter search criteria in the field at the top of the window to find a specific class, group, or student. (In the "Select Students" pop-up window, district- and school-level users can select a grade to narrow down the list of students.)
    Examples of the pop-up windows that appear when the Classes, Groups, or Students links are selected. In each case, a search field at the top lets you search for specific classes, groups, or students; a check box above the listed classes, groups, or students lets you select or deselect all of them at once; and the Clear All link, Cancel button, and Save Selection buttons are at the bottom. In the Select Students window, there is a drop-down list to the left of the search field where district- and school-level users can specify a single grade to search within.

    • School administrators and school staff can only select classes, groups, or students in their own school.
    • Teachers can only select their own classes, their own groups, or students enrolled in one of their own classes.

    Once you have made your choices, select Save Selection at the bottom of the pop-up window.

  4. If you want to use demographic data to further refine the data in the report, select Change Demographics... (or Choose Demographics...)

    By default, the "All" option is chosen for Ethnicity, Gender, Language, and Grade Level. To reduce the scope, choose the "Select" option at the top of the appropriate column and then check your selections in that column.

    In the example above, the user has selected two Languages and three Grade Levels, while leaving Ethnicity and Gender at the default "All" options. Note: The Filter Reports by Ethnicity user permission may be set to prevent the use of ethnicities as a filter.

    By default, the "All" option is chosen for Characteristics. To reduce the scope, choose Select Characteristics... and then check each characteristic you want students in the report to have. You must also choose any or all (after "Include students with") to specify whether students with any of the selected characteristics will be included in the report or only those with all of the selected characteristics.

    In the example above, the user selected two Characteristics (ADA and ESL). Because any is selected, the report will include students who are ADA, ESL, or both. If all had been selected, only students who are both ADA and ESL would be included. Note: The Filter Reports by Characteristics user permission may be set to prevent the use of characteristics as a filter.

    Once you are finished choosing demographic options, select Apply at the bottom of the window to save your choices (or Cancel to close the window without saving your choices).

  5. Use the Group By drop-down list to choose how you want the information in the report to be grouped: by classes/groups, grades, teachers, or not grouped.

    Use the Date Range drop-down list to choose the dates you want to generate the report for. You can select an existing marking period, screening window, or you can select Custom... and set your own dates (use the calendars to select a range of dates or type them in the fields using m/d/yyyy format; then select Apply to use the dates you have chosen or Cancel to close this pop-up without saving your selection). Dates can be in the current school year or up to three years prior to the current school year.

    The user has selected a Group By option, and has chosen to select custom dates. A pop-up calendar is open, allowing the user to choose the dates. The dates can also be entered in the fields above the calendar. The Apply and Cancel buttons are in the upper-right corner of the pop-up window.

    If schools use their own unique date ranges within a district screening window, those ranges will all have the same name. To help you tell them apart, the dates they cover will be added to the end of the name.

  6. If necessary, use the Scale drop-down list to choose which scale you want to use for the scores on the report.

    • The Lexile® Scale will not be a selectable option if the report is being run for Star Early Literacy Spanish, Star Math English, or Star Math Spanish.
  7. Check Show Grade Equivalent if you want Grade Equivalent scores to be included on the report.

    Check Show Testing Location if you want the report to show whether students tested at the school or remotely.

    Check Show Student ID to include Student IDs in the report.

    Check Hide Groups Without Data if you want to exclude groups from the report that have no testing data.

  8. Once you are done choosing report options, select Update Report.

  9. The report will generate and then open at the bottom of the page.
    An example report. In the upper part, a table summarizes test-taking data for the students in the selected class (student names and IDs, date taken, duration, rank, test scores, and whether the test was taken in the school). The median scores are shown in the last row.

    For each class or group, the data is presented in two parts. In the first part, you can see each student's test date, duration, test scores, and rank within the class or group (based on the Scaled Score). You will also see which of them tested in school (if you selected that option earlier; "N/A" means either the test was taken before this tracking feature was added to the program or your school/district is not tracking this information). The scores shown will vary based on the assignment type chosen—the example above is for a Star Math Enterprise (English) assessment.

    • If you selected a scale earlier, the score in the SS column is shown in that scale.
    • If all the students in the class/group are in the same grade, the median for the scores will be shown at the bottom of the table.
    • If the report is for Star Reading assessments and the following conditions are met:
      then the Lexile® range will be shown instead of the ZPD.
    • If the report is for Star Early Literacy and a student's Lexile® Measure is below BR400L, a dash is shown on the report instead. (Lexile® Measures below BR400L are not meant to be used to match readers with text.)
    • If the report is for Star Math Enterprise (English) or Star Math Progress Monitoring (English) assessments and the Quantile® measure preference has been set to show Quantile® Measures, the report will show Quantile® measures. (At this time, Quantile® measures are not available for Star Math Spanish, Star Math Algebra, or Star Math Geometry assessments.)
    Below this, you will see two tables: for the students in the class/group, the left table shows a summary of their Percentile Rank (PR) distribution, and the right table shows a summary of their Grade Equivalent (GE) distribution.

    If the report is for Star Reading, there will be a third table shown: Instructional Reading Level (IRL) distribution.

    Beneath those tables, you will also see a list of students who did not test and a count/score summary for students who did test.

    • When the average Scaled Score is calculated for a group of students, the Rasch scores are averaged first; that average is then converted to the average Scaled Score for the group. This method is more accurate than using each student's individual Scaled Score for the calculation.
    • Scaled Score medians are calculated on Rasch scores, not on converted Enterprise scores. Similarly, Percentile Rank medians are calculated from the median Normal Curve Equivalent. This is why the medians shown on this report may be different from the ones shown on other reports, such as the Consolidated Summary Report.
  10. You can change any of the options you have selected and then regenerate the report by selecting Update Report.
  11. Select the PDF icon at the top of the page or the Print or Save button above the first table in the report to create a PDF of the report. You can also select the Download Data button above the first table in the report to download a CSV (comma-separated values) version of the report that you can open in a spreadsheet program.

  12. To return to the Reports page, select either Back to Reports or the report icon at the top of the screen.
