Growth Proficiency Chart

The Growth Proficiency Chart is a dynamic scatterplot chart that provides a customizable comparison of how specific schools, classes, and students are performing based on the current Student Growth Percentile (SGP) and % Proficient (for districts and schools) or Scaled Score or Percentile Rank (for students' latest tests). Your permission group determines what information is shown in the default view and what options are available for drilling down further into the data.

Anatomy of the Growth Proficiency Chart

[1] The Growth axis, showing either SGP (for students) or Median SGP (for school groups, schools, and classes); values range from 0 to 100. Select or hover over the circled-i icon for more information.

[2] The Proficiency axis, showing either Scaled Scores (for students when State benchmarks are selected) or % Proficient (in all other cases). % Proficient values range from 0 to 100; Scaled Score values will vary based on the type of assessment chosen. Select or hover over the circled-i icon for more information.

[3] The blue circles represent different things based on the level of data you are viewing:

Note that the circles can overlap. Use the zoom controls [4] to zoom in and out on the chart. While zoomed in, select and drag within the chart to move the view around. After one of these controls is used, a Reset Zoom button will appear that you can use to reset the zoom to the default level.

[5] The vertical dashed line represents the growth expectation level you set (an SGP).

When viewing class-level data, a horizontal dashed line represents the minimum proficiency level (when viewing district- or school-level data, the horizontal dashed line will not appear).

• For state benchmarks, it represents the Scaled Score students need in order to reach the minimum proficiency level.
• For district or school benchmarks, it represents the Percentile Rank chosen by the district or school administrator as the minimum proficiency level.
  
  

[6] When you hover over a circle, it is highlighted and a pop-up window opens with data for the school, class, or student represented by that circle. If it is possible to "drill down" to additional layers of data, a button will appear in the pop-up window [7] which you can use to get down to the next level.

[8] The name of the district, school, or class you are viewing is shown here, along with the number of items in the next-lower "level" of the hierarchy:

[9] This heading shows you what "level" of data you are looking at and also provides links so you can easily go up to a higher level. For example, if you are a district administrator or district staff member who has drilled down to the class-level view, this heading might read:

The information in the chart is also presented in a table underneath it, which can be exported as a PDF or CSV file.

Using the Growth Proficiency Chart

1. Use the School and Class drop-down lists at the top of the page to choose which data will appear in the initial view of the Growth Proficiency Chart.
   
   
   
   

   District level administrators and district staff members in districts using school groups will have an additional drop-down list, School Group, which they can use to select a specific school group instead of going down to the school and class level.

   

   Your user permissions group and the number of schools you have access to affect the available options:

2. Use the additional drop-down lists to narrow down the information shown in the chart.
   
   
   
   
   • Subject and Assessment : These determine the type of assessment data used to populate the chart; the selection you make in the Subject list determines what options are available in the Assessment list:

     Subjects and/or assessments will not be included in the drop-down lists if the selected school or class does not use them.

     When an assessment is chosen, the Growth Proficiency Chart uses the latest assessment of that type and works backwards to find an SGP; therefore, the SGP may differ from the one shown on the Star Growth Report.

   • Grade : Select the grade(s) of the students whose data you want to include in the chart; you can use the links at the bottom of the drop-down list to select/clear all the grades at once. Your user type will have an effect on what your selections mean:

   • Benchmark Type : Select the benchmark you want to measure student performance against: District, School, or State (if the selected assessment type is Star Math or Star Reading).
     
     

     District administrators and district staff looking at all schools in the district will not be able to select School as the benchmark.

   • Growth Expectation : Select the SGP level you want to serve as the minimum level of growth you want students to reach (represented by the vertical dashed line [5] on the chart).
3. Once you have chosen your options, select Update Report . The chart will update based on the options you have chosen; you can choose different options at any time and select Update Report again.
4. The blue circles on the chart [3] represent the schools, classes, or students whose data you are viewing. Hover over a circle to see more detailed information [6]; use the zoom controls [4] to zoom the view in and out if necessary. If it is possible to drill down to another level of data, use the button in the pop-up window [7] to do so; use the breadcrumb trail [9] to go back up again.
   
   

   If you are looking at the Class View (where every circle represents one student) and you have chosen State as the benchmark, the values on the Proficiency axis [2] will change to Scaled Scores. An additional drop-down list, Scale, will appear ; use it to choose which scale you want to use on the axis: Star Enterprise or Star Unified (or Lexile® measure if the selected assessment is Star Reading or Star Reading Spanish).
   
   

5. Select the Print or Save button above the first table in the report to create a PDF of the report. You can also select the Download Data button above the first table in the report to download a CSV (comma-separated values) version of the report that you can open in a spreadsheet program.
