After a Diagnostic test, Star Phonics may recommend Lalilo lessons that relate to the skill category that you tested the student on and any errors the student made. You can assign recommended lessons directly from the Student Instructional Recommendations report in Star Phonics.
When Are Recommendations Available?
Recommendations are available if:
- Your school or district has a Lalilo subscription and educators have a premium account.
- Lalilo is accessed through your Renaissance Home page or Renaissance Next.
- Lalilo is one of the products assigned to your Star Phonics class.
How to See the Recommendations
If Lalilo recommendations are available, you will see them in the Diagnostic Student reports, either after the Diagnostic test or when you view the Student Instructional Recommendations report.
On that page, the recommended Lalilo lessons are checked. You can assign up to 5 lessons. You can check other lessons or remove check marks for any of the lessons.
Lessons for skills marked red (skills needing the most instruction and practice, if any) are recommended first; lessons may also be recommended for skills marked yellow (skills needing some instruction and practice) and green (skills to review). Use the arrows to expand or collapse lists that aren't expanded by default:
To find out more about a lesson, select the icon in the Lesson Details column to open a popup window with a description. To close the lesson details, select the x.
When you're ready to assign the lessons, select Assign # Selected Lessons at the bottom of the page.
A popup message will confirm that the lessons have been assigned and will include a link to assignments in Lalilo. As the message reminds you, the lessons will be available to students for 30 days. Using the options at the bottom of the message, you can choose to go to the next student report (the bar graph) or to remain on the Instructional Recommendations page.
If you stay on the Instructional Recommendations report page, the lessons will be marked as "Assigned" with the date assigned noted for each lesson. This is only true for lessons assigned through Star Phonics; lessons that you assign through Lalilo are not shown as "Assigned" in Star Phonics. To see the assignments in Lalilo, select Go to Assignments in Lalilo to check progress or to manage assignments above the table.
Things to note:
- If you assign a lesson that is already in progress in Lalilo, that lesson will not be assigned again.
- If the student previously completed a lesson, the lesson can be assigned again through Star Phonics.
In Lalilo, lessons that were assigned through Star Phonics include the "Assigned from Star Phonics" message in the Assignments > By Assignment view:
What Are the Recommendations Based On?
Lessons are recommended in the order they appear in Lalilo’s Scope and Sequence. Lalilo’s Scope and Sequence is systematically designed to support the acquisition of phonics skills by presenting skills and phonics concepts in order from simple to complex. Lessons on more frequently used letters and sounds appear first, and lessons build on each other so that when students are asked to combine skills (such as in a CVC word family lesson), they have already had practice in the individual letter-sound combinations within that word family. As students move later in the Scope and Sequence, they will experience more complex lesson content. For this reason, we recommend starting with the lessons as they are ordered in the recommendations to ensure that students have the opportunity to build on the skills they have practiced.
