After selecting Explore to go to Metric Zoom, you can choose the years and data to view, to filter by student or by school data, to use other views, or to export data.
Choose the Years and Time Periods to View
Choose to view data for up to five school years for Star data or up to two years for Accelerated Reader, myON, Freckle, and Star CBM data.
For Star Reading, Star Math, and Star Early Literacy data, and for Star CBM benchmark data, this allows you to compare data for specific district screening windows across multiple years. When a year is selected (dark blue background), its data is shown; when it is not selected (white background), its data is not shown. You can also select individual screening windows (such as Fall, Winter, or Spring) within years; when a screening window is selected, the text is in dark blue, while when it is not selected, the text is faded.
For Accelerated Reader, myON, and Freckle data and for Star CBM students assessed data, data is shown for 28-day time periods, and you can compare data for similar time periods across multiple years. When a time period is selected, the text is in dark blue; when it's not, the text is faded.
If the learning progressions selected in your Renaissance Learning Standards have been changed, or if the learning progressions that are selected have been updated over the summer, Star standard and domain/strand data from past years will not be available.
Depending on your selections, past data may include only students who are enrolled in active schools in the current school year or both currently enrolled students and those who are no longer enrolled. If you filter or compare by current grade level, Is SPED, EL Status, migrant status, or SPED status, then only students who are currently enrolled in schools in the district and who have the values you select are included. For example, if you filter for students who are currently in 5th grade, then the data will show students who are currently enrolled in schools in the district who are in in 5th grade now; you will see data over the selected years (when the students were in previous grades).
If you filter or compare only by gender or primary ethnicity, the data will include both students who are enrolled now and those who were enrolled in the past so that you can see if there were differences in performance by gender or ethnicity over time. This is also true when you filter or compare by school level and/or school region.

View Proficiency Data by Standard (for Star Reading, Star Math, and Star Early Literacy Assessment Metrics)
When you go to Metric Zoom for a Star Reading, Star Math, or Star Early Literacy proficiency score metric, Renaissance Analytics includes standards-level data based on Star assessment results, Star Custom assessments, and Accelerated Math Instructional Practice assignments. This is comprehensive mastery information, including both assessed and probed data. This data can help you see how students are performing today, how their performance has changed over time, and how they likely will perform on state tests in the future. This can help inform instructional and curricular adjustments across the district, in specific schools, with specific grades, or with groups of students.
For district and state proficiency data, use the Choose Content drop-down list and choose Standard to choose to view by standard. You can see the percentage and number of students who have achieved secure mastery for the standard. Secure mastery for each student represents 80-100% mastery.
The standards that are shown in Renaissance Analytics are those selected in the Learning Standards settings in Renaissance software. If the setting has been changed, or if the learning progression was updated over the summer, data from past years will not be shown.
When you first choose to view by standard, all standards are selected. One way to view the data more efficiently is to choose the table link or tile and view the data in table form.
If you prefer to stay in the graph view, it's helpful to select only those standards you're interested in. The quickest way to do this is to first select the x to the right of the selected standards to clear the selections.
Then, select the "Select Content" field and do one of the following:
- Type the standard to find it quickly, then check it in the list that opens. When you're done selecting standards, select Apply.
- Scroll through the list and check the standards that you want to view data for. When you're done selecting standards, select Apply.
If you view multiple standards, in the list on the left, you can hover over a standard to highlight it on the graph, or select a standard to remove it from the graph or re-add it. If you hover over a line or point on the graph, you can see more details, including the number of students who have achieved secure mastery.
Students do not need to be tested on an item on a specific standard in order for Star to generate a score for a standard. Mastery scores are based on the student's grade and the student's Star score. Based on years of testing and decades’ worth of data on how students with the same scale score performed on the set of items each student encountered on the test, Renaissance estimates how all students would perform on all items. Regardless of which items a student interacts with, Star can generate scores for any standard that has any item data in the assessment item bank. Star can estimate a score of every standard even when there is no item in the Star assessment bank. Renaissance has learning progressions for every state, which includes skills for every standard. By using Star item data for a subset of those skills, Renaissance can place every skill, and therefore every standard, on the same scale as Star. Additionally, even if a student is performing two grade levels below assigned grade level, with the data about how other students are performing, scores can be estimated at the assigned grade level.
View Data by Strand (for Star Reading, Star Math, and Star Early Literacy Score Metrics)
Renaissance Analytics also lets you view data by strand so that you identify the areas in which students may need more instruction. Use the Choose Content drop-down list and select Strand to choose to view by strand (domain).
Then, check the strands that you want to view.
If you view multiple strands, you can hover over a strand to highlight it on the graph, or select a strand to remove it from the graph or re-add it. If you hover over a line on the graph, you can see more details, including the percentage and number of students who have achieved secure mastery for the strand. Secure mastery for each student represents 80-100% mastery.
View Accelerated Reader Data by ATOS Book Level, Literary Category, or Quiz Type
For Accelerated Reader, Renaissance Analytics lets you view data by ATOS book level, literary category (fiction or nonfiction), or quiz type (Article, Literacy Skills, Other Reading, Reading Practice, or Vocabulary Practice Quizzes). This allows you to see how students perform based on book difficulty, the type of book, or the type of quiz.
In the Choose Content drop-down list, select one of the options.
After you choose an option, all book levels, literary categories, or quiz types will be selected by default. If you want to see just some of them, select the arrow to the right; then, check the book levels, literary types, or quiz types that you want to view data for. Then, select Apply above the list of practice types.
In the graph view, you can select a book level range, literary type, or quiz type on the left to add or remove that data from the graph. You can also hover over a line and time period (dot) on the graph to see specific information. When you do this, the data type that the line represents is highlighted on the left.
Table and distribution views are also available as described below.
View myON Data by ATOS Book Level or Literary Category
For myON, Renaissance Analytics lets you view data by ATOS book level or literary category (fiction or nonfiction).
In the Choose Content drop-down list, select one of the options.
After you choose an option, all book levels or literary categories will be selected by default. If you want to see just some of them, select the arrow to the right; then, check the book levels or literary types that you want to view data for. Then, select Apply above the list of practice types.
In the graph view, you can select a book level range or literary type on the left to add or remove that data from the graph. View Star CBM Students Assessed Data by Measure
For Star CBM students assessed, Renaissance Analytics lets you view overall data or data by Star CBM assessment measure. To choose how to view data, select the Choose Content drop-down list and choose either Overall or Assessment. Overall shows you how many students completed at least one assessment of any type in each time period. Assessment shows you how many students completed at least one assessment of each type that you select.
If you choose Assessment, by default, all assessment measures will be listed; the measures available depend on whether you are viewing the metric for Star CBM Reading, Star CBM Math, or Star CBM Lectura.
If you want to narrow the list down to certain assessments/measures, select the arrow to the right; then, check only the assessment measures that you want to focus on.
Then, select Apply above the list of assessment measures.
In the graph view, if you chose to view by measure instead of Overall, you can select a assessment measure on the left to add or remove that measure from the graph.
You can also hover over a line or time period (dot) on the graph to see specific information. When you do this, the measure that the dot represents is highlighted on the left.
Table and distribution views are also available as described below.
Filter by Demographic or School Data
Use the Filter By drop-down list to choose whether to filter by grades, EL status, gender, migrant status, primary ethnicity, school level, school region, or school. (Note that only the demographic data that has been entered in your Renaissance software is available for these filters.)
Depending on your selections, past data may include only students who are currently enrolled or both currently enrolled students and those who are no longer enrolled. If you filter or compare by current grade level, Is SPED, EL Status, migrant status, or SPED status, then only currently enrolled students with the values you select are included. For example, if you filter for students who are currently in 5th grade, then the data will show students who are currently enrolled and in 5th grade now over the selected years (when they were in previous grades).
If you filter or compare only by gender or primary ethnicity, the data will include both students who are enrolled now and those who were enrolled in the past so that you can see if there were differences in performance by gender or ethnicity over time. This is also true when you filter or compare by school level and/or school region.
See Demographics for more about students’ assigned demographics.
Compare By Demographic or School Data
Use the Compare By drop-down list to choose to compare students by grades, EL status, gender, migrant status, primary ethnicity, school level, school region, or school.
You can then hover over the items you're comparing to highlight them or select items to remove them from the graph and add them again. You can hover over a line on the graph to see more information as shown below.
Other Views
Take advantage of the other views. For example, select Table to see the data in a table instead of a graph.
Or select Distribution to see distribution graphs instead of trend lines:
Each section of the stacked bars on the distribution graph includes the percentage and number of students included in that segment of results. For instance, in the example above, for Spring 2018-2019 (the last bar in the example), we can see that 1,996 students, or 61.8% of those assessed in that district screening window, achieved "Exceeds Expectations" for the metric. This helps you deepen your analysis of results and compare percentages across time periods.
For the Star Proficiency Rates for State Benchmarks, you can also select Other Reports to go to the Renaissance Star reports.
Export Data
Select Export CSV to export the data you're viewing in table form in a .csv file, which can be opened by most spreadsheet programs. Select Export PNG to export the metric zoom window you're viewing to a .png file, which can be opened by most image-viewing programs and can be added to presentations, emails, or other media.
