Category filter removes the categories/words from screener assessments that would appear under the "Not Taught" label based on the school or district's selected scope and sequence. The category filter can be set by the District Administrator for either a school or the district for all grades or a single grade; School Administrators can set the category filter for their own schools. To find out how administrators set the filter, see Administrator Tasks in Star Phonics.
How the Category Filter Affects Screener Assessments and Reports
On the Screener assessment, the number of words will be reduced because words in the "Not Taught" category for your school's selected scope and sequence will be removed.
Reports will also be affected. Student reports are affected as described below. Not Taught words will also be omitted from class, grade, and district reports.
Student Bar Graph Report
When the filter is not applied, the Student Bar Graph Report includes all 36 words and all categories are displayed because the assessment includes all words and categories.
When the filter is applied, the report, like the assessment, will not include the categories that are "Not Taught." In the example below, the assessment has 12 words, and the report does not display the "Not Taught" categories.
Student Tile Report
In this example, the filter is not applied, so the Student Tile Report includes all 12 categories and all 36 words.
When the filter is applied, this is reduced to 4 categories and 12 words:
Diagnostic Recommendation Report
Like the Student Bar Graph and Student Tile Report, the Diagnostic Recommendation Report shows fewer categories when the category filter is applied.
In this example, the filter is not applied, so all 12 categories are shown.
But when the filter is applied, only 4 categories are shown:
