Instructional Planning - Student Report

The Instructional Planning - Student Report provides a list of recommended skills for individualized instruction based on the most recent student activity. (The Instructional Planning - Class Report does this for classes or groups.)

1. Use the Subject and Assessment Types drop-down lists to choose the assessment types to include in the report. The assessment types available will change depending on the subject chosen:

   Math Spanish	Star Math Spanish	You will not need to select an assessment type; Star Math Spanish is the only assessment type and will automatically be chosen.

2. Use the School drop-down list to select a school.
   
   
   • If you are assigned to only one school, you will not see the School drop-down list.
   • School administrators and school staff can only select their own schools.
   • Teachers can only select schools that they are assigned to.
3. Use the Students drop-down list to select either a single class at the chosen school, or choose All Classes to select all the classes at the chosen school.
   
   
   • School administrators and school staff can only select classes in their own school.
   • Teachers can only select their own classes.
   
   To select specific classes, groups, or students at the chosen school, use the links below the Students drop-down list. Selecting one of these links will open a corresponding pop-up window; in that window, enter search criteria in the field at the top of the window to find specific classes, groups, or students with names that start with the criteria you enter (in the "Select Students" pop-up window, district- and school-level users can select a grade to narrow down the list of students). Once you've searched, check the box at the top of the list to select all the available choices, or make individual selections below it.
   
   
   
   • School administrators and school staff can only select classes, groups, or students in their own school.
   • Teachers can only select their own classes, their own groups, or students enrolled in one of their own classes.
   • Select the arrow in the heading of a column to re-sort by the data in that column. The arrow indicates which column is being used for sorting and the order of the sort: up arrow = A–Z, down arrow = Z–A).
   
   Once you have made your choices, select Save Selection at the bottom of the pop-up window.

4. If you want to use demographic data to further refine the data in the report, select Change Demographics... (or Choose Demographics...).
   
   

   By default, the "All" option is chosen for Ethnicity, Gender, Language, and Grade Level. To reduce the scope, choose the "Select" option at the top of the appropriate column and then check your selections in that column.
   
   In the example above, the user has selected two Languages and three Grade Levels, while leaving Ethnicity and Gender at the default "All" options. Note: The Filter Reports by Ethnicity user permission may be set to prevent the use of ethnicities as a filter.

   By default, the "All" option is chosen for Characteristics. To reduce the scope, choose Select Characteristics... and then check each characteristic you want students in the report to have. You must also choose any or all (after "Include students with") to specify whether students with any of the selected characteristics will be included in the report or only those with all of the selected characteristics.
   
   
   In the example above, the user selected two Characteristics (ADA and ESL). Because any is selected, the report will include students who are ADA, ESL, or both. If all had been selected, only students who are both ADA and ESL would be included. Note: The Filter Reports by Characteristics user permission may be set to prevent the use of characteristics as a filter.

   Once you are finished choosing demographic options, select Apply at the bottom of the window to save your choices (or Cancel to close the window without saving your choices).
5. Use the Sort Students By drop-down list to choose how you want students to be sorted in the report: by grade or last name.
   
   
6. If necessary, use the Scale drop-down list to choose which scale you want to use for the scores on the report. (If you select a scale that doesn't apply to the selected assignment type, the default scale for that assignment type will be used.)

   • The Lexile® scale will not be a selectable option if the report is being run for Star Early Literacy Spanish, Star Math English, or Star Math Spanish.
7. Use the Benchmark Type drop-down list to choose which benchmark you want to measure students' scores against.
   
   

   State benchmarks are not currently available for Star Early Literacy, Star Early Literacy Spanish, Star Reading Spanish, and Star Math Spanish.

8. Check Show only the Focus Skills if you only want focus skills to be shown in the Suggested Skills section.
   
   If you selected Reading Spanish as the Subject earlier, you can check Identify English/Spanish Transferable Skills to have transferable skills highlighted in the Suggested Skills section. (Transferable skills are universal skills that transfer across English and Spanish, as well as other languages.)
   
   Check Hide Students Without Data if you want to have students without test data omitted from the report.
   
   
9. Once you are done choosing report options, select Update Report.
10. The report will generate and then open at the bottom of the page.
    
    
    You will see each student's name, grade, and the date and time of their most recent assessment (of the assessment type you have selected). Note: If the student has not taken an assessment of the selected type in the current school year, but had taken assessments of that type in the previous school year, the report will use the data from the most recent assessment from the previous school year.
    
    Below this is a graph showing the student's Scaled Score from the most recent test, the student's projected Scaled Score, and the benchmark categories those scores fall into. Note: If the most recent test is from the previous school year (as described above), benchmark data for the test will not be shown.
    
    You will see the scores (with additional information) repeated beneath the graph. If the assessment type is for reading, you will also see students' IRL and ZPD scores (ZPD scores are not available for Spanish assessments).

    • If you selected a scale earlier, the score in the SS section is shown in that scale.
    • If the report is for Star Reading assessments and the following conditions are met:
      
      • the report would normally show a student's Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), and
      • the Lexile® range preference has been set to use Lexile® ranges,
      then the Lexile® range will be shown instead of the ZPD.
    • If the report is for Star Math Enterprise (English) or Star Math Progress Monitoring (English) assessments and the Quantile® measure preference has been set to show Quantile® measures, the report will show Quantile® measures. (At this time, Quantile® measures are not available for Star Math Spanish, Star Math Algebra, or Star Math Geometry assessments.)
    • Projected scores shows a prediction of the Scaled Score the student would attain if the student experienced typical growth (SGP of 50) by the last date of the school year. The calculation is based on the scores from Star Reading, Star Reading Spanish, Star Early Literacy, Star Early Literacy Spanish, Star Math, or Star Math Spanish tests and updates after every test the student takes.
11. Below the scores and benchmarks, you will see a list of suggested skills for the student. These are recommended skills that the student is probably ready to begin learning—they will be challenging, but not too difficult.
    • The grade level for each skill is shown on the left. (Note: "GM" = Geometry, "A1" = Algebra 1, and "A2" = Algebra 2.)
    • For Star Reading Spanish and Star Early Literacy Spanish, the skills will be in the language you selected earlier.
    • Skills with the icon are focus skills, the most critical skills to learn at each grade level.
    • Skills with the icon are transferable skills (universal skills that transfer across English and Spanish, as well as other languages).
    • Star Early Literacy and Star Early Literacy Spanish assessments are designed to assess early literacy skills. Therefore, skills beyond the end of grade 2/start of grade 3 (depending on the state) will not be displayed. The report will note "No skill suggestions available for score and grade level."
    Note that the skills shown are based on the learning standards chosen for your district (the name of the standards appears to the right of the "Suggested Skills" heading).

12. You can change any of the options you have selected and then regenerate the report by selecting Update Report.
13. To print the report, select the PDF icon at the top of the page: .
14. To return to the Reports page, select either Back to Reports or the report icon at the top of the page.
